Kardashiv Val is one of the oldest chapters in the history of Povorsklya, a place where the might of the Scythian civilization shines through the millennia. Nestled among rolling hills, this 5th–3rd century BCE settlement impresses not only with its antiquity but also with a unique atmosphere of power and vastness.
Kardashiv Val was an important defensive stronghold and part of a vast system of fortifications guarding the approaches to the Bilsk settlement—one of the largest fortified settlements in ancient Europe. It was here that ancient trade routes passed, traveled by merchants, warriors, and travelers.
The settlement covers an area of about 9 hectares. And although time has altered its contours, one can still see the remains of earthen ramparts and moats here—silent witnesses to the ancient defensive structures. Once, these fortifications were significantly taller and more robust, forming a complex defense system. Researchers believe that the ramparts were built from local soil, and their structure may have been supplemented with wooden walls and towers.
In addition to its defensive function, Kardashiv Val served to control the surrounding territories. From its heights, a wide panorama of the Vorskla River valley unfolds—it was precisely this natural “observation platform” that allowed for the timely detection of danger and the coordination of movements.
Today, this place attracts not only historians and archaeologists but also tourists seeking a blend of nature and antiquity. Here, one can feel a special rhythm of time: the wind blows between the ramparts, the grasses whisper their stories, and the landscape unfolds just as it did thousands of years ago.
