Vasyl Krychevsky State Art Lyceum in Opishnia

The Vasyl Krychevsky State Art Lyceum in Opishnia is not merely an educational institution, but a vibrant hub of Ukrainian art, where tradition is not preserved in museums but is brought to life every day in the hands of young artists. It is here that children from all over Ukraine, from an early age, immerse themselves in the world of clay, form, and ornamentation, continuing the centuries-old history of Opishnia pottery.
The Lyceum is the successor to the renowned Opishnia School of Artistic Ceramics of the early 20th century—a place where traditions were formed that are now recognized as part of the national cultural heritage. Here, classical education and deep practical immersion in the craft harmoniously combine: students not only study art but also create it with their own hands.
The constant presence of creativity creates a special atmosphere: pottery wheels spin in the workshops, giving birth to clay toys, decorative compositions, and contemporary ceramic sculptures. For visitors, this is a unique opportunity to witness the process of creating works—from raw clay to a finished piece of art.
The Lyceum is also open to guests. Here, interactive master classes called “Pottery ArtDrive” are held, during which anyone can try their hand at being a master: work at a potter’s wheel, mold a traditional toy, or create their own decorative piece. This is not just a lesson—it is an experience that leaves you with warm emotions and a sense of connection to an ancient craft.
The school features exhibition spaces showcasing works by students and faculty—ranging from classic Opishnia-style painting to bold contemporary forms. These displays demonstrate how tradition lives on, evolves, and finds new meaning in the hands of the younger generation.
Of particular significance is Vasyl Krychevsky, after whom the lyceum is named. He was the founder of Ukrainian architectural modernism and the designer of Ukraine’s small State Emblem.  Near the  lyceum is the Museum of the Krychevsky Artistic Family, which creates a cohesive artistic space and enhances the cultural significance of this location.
The Opishnia Art Lyceum is a place where the past and the future meet in clay. Here, a new generation of artists is born, one that not only preserves traditions but also reinterprets them, giving Ukrainian culture a new resonance.
