Hlynsk Fortified Settlement (Hlynsk Village)

The Hlynsk Fortified Settlement is one of the oldest and most fascinating historical sites in the Poltava region, offering travelers a glimpse into the depths of a thousand-year-old history. Located among the picturesque hills of the village of Hlynsk, it is part of the Bilsk Fortress—one of the largest archaeological complexes in Europe.
This area was inhabited as early as the last third of the 1st millennium CE. It was here, on the high hills of the Gorodysche and Pansky Yarok tracts, that ancient Slavic tribes—the Severians—built powerful fortifications. Earthen ramparts and defensive structures attest to the strategic importance of this site, which served as a reliable outpost and protection for the region’s inhabitants.
The Hlynsk Fortress is a unique example of the fusion of two cultural traditions—the Romny and Kievan Rus’ traditions. Here, one can literally feel the transition of eras: from early Slavic settlements to the developed culture of Kievan Rus’.
Archaeological research has been ongoing here for over a century and continues to uncover new chapters of history. Among the most significant finds is a cross-shaped pendant from the Kyivan Rus’ era, discovered in 2011, which has become an important testament to the spiritual life of that time.
Today, the Hlynsk settlement is not only a site for scholars but also a special place for travelers. Here, you can walk along ancient ramparts, feel the breath of history, and imagine how life once thrived within these fortifications.
It is a place where the silence of nature blends with the grandeur of the past, and every step is a step toward the history that shaped the Ukrainian land.
