The cossack cross of Filon Lykhopii
The cossack cross of Filon Lykhopii
On one of Opishnia’s picturesque hills, where the sky seems to touch the earth, stands the Cossack Cross of Filon Lykhopii—a symbol of remembrance, strength, and the undying cossack spirit.
This location is no coincidence. It was here that important roads once ran, and nearby was a crossing over the Vorskla River—a natural boundary and, at the same time, the lifeblood of the region. Events once raged here, of which only the wind, the open space, and memories etched in history remain today.
The cross was erected in honor of Filon Lykhopii—the koshovo ataman of the Zaporizhzhia Sich and a centurion from Opishnia. His figure remains shrouded in mystery, but one thing is certain: he was a man of his time—brave, decisive, and involved in the great events of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Even old maps have preserved traces of his name in the names of farmsteads that once existed on these lands.
Today, this place is not only a historical landmark but also one of the best vantage points in Opishnia. From here, sweeping views unfold: green hills, a river valley, and distant horizons fading into the haze. It is easy to imagine Cossack sentries standing here, gazing into the distance.
It is a space of silence and reflection. A space where the depth of time is felt.
Filon Lykhopii’s Cossack Cross is not just about the past. It is about the connection between generations, about a memory that never fades, and about a strength passed down through the ages.
