Memorial museum-estate of the Poshyvailo potter family

In the village of Opishnia, amid the quiet of the estates and clay-covered paths, there is a place where time seems to slow down, and the memory of the Poshyvailo family of potters comes alive in every object. The Poshyvailo Pottery Dynasty Memorial Museum-Estate is not just a museum, but the living history of several generations of masters for whom clay became a way of thinking and a way of life.
At the center of this story is Gavrylo Nychyporovych Poshyvailo (1909–1991), one of the most famous masters of 20th-century Ukrainian folk ceramics and a representative of Opishnia ceramics, who learned the craft from his parents as a child and later elevated it to a new artistic level. His work encompasses a wide range of forms: from traditional tableware to zoomorphic sculpture and narrative compositions in which folk life took on a figurative, almost theatrical expressiveness.
Next to him is Yavdokha Danilivna Poshyvailo (1910–1994), one of Opishnia’s most brilliant painters. Her painting is a living breath of the Ukrainian ornamental tradition: flowers, birds, and grapevines blossomed on jugs and bowls quickly and confidently, as if born directly from the rhythm of life. It was her painting that gave the family’s works a special emotionality and recognizability.
The museum-estate preserves the atmosphere of a genuine potter’s courtyard. Here, the interiors of the dwelling, outbuildings, pottery tools, and household items remain, offering a glimpse not only into the artists’ creative process but also into their daily lives. Of particular value is the large collection of ceramics—nearly a thousand pieces, among
The Poshyvailo Family Museum offers a glimpse not just of individual works, but of the family’s entire world, where pottery was passed down as a legacy, as daily labor, and as an inner calling. It is a space where the continuity of tradition is palpable—from the first generations of potters to the contemporary interpretation of folk art.
Today, this estate is an important part of Opishnia’s cultural landscape and one of the key places where you can experience the depth of the Ukrainian ceramic tradition, its human warmth, and its continuity.
